Day 12: Make it easy for newbies to get started with your podcast

Welcome to Day 12

Don't miss our free event on TUESDAY: The Deck Opener — How to Hook Sponsors For Your Podcast — July 14th at 5 PM, online

Today's Prompt

Make it easy for a new fan to get into your podcast

Whether you've been at it for a while and have a huge episode catalog, or you're newer to the game, here are some tips to help you create an easy on-ramp for newbies.

Suggestions for Implementation

These suggestions got pretty beefy pretty quickly. In the interest of giving you a skimmable email, the bullet points below are the short version. For extra details, links, and examples, go here.

  • Create a Start Here page on your website. Which episodes will reel someone in and get them up to speed?
  • Create Starter Pack episode groups. Especially if your show's premise is a broad one.
  • Add a link to your show in your email signature.
  • Add a link to your show in your social media profiles.
  • Create a podcast trailer.
  • Consider a reverse interview. Is there someone in your orbit that could interview YOU on your own show?
  • If you have a newsletter for your podcast, make sure your welcome sequence is dialed in.
  • When outlining / scripting your show, consider the first-timer. Always introduce yourself and the show's premise.
  • Know your elevator pitch.
  • Use a universal link (or your website's link) when posting on social.

Shoutouts

A semi-regular segment where I'll shoutout some of our Slack community members. Check out these shows:

  • More Movement Please is a raw and real account of a woman trying to get fit in her feral 40s.
  • noseyAF features conversations about art, activism, and social change with artists, organizers, entrepreneurs, and other folks shaping culture and community.
  • Her Shrink Ray Eye is a thoughtful, slightly rebellious podcast about miniature art, scale modeling, and why small worlds can hold such strange power.
  • Femme and Furious is smashing the patriarchy.
