Today's Prompt

Set up a newsletter for your podcast, and give it a reason to exist on its own.

A newsletter gives you a direct line to your audience, additional sponsorship inventory, and a way to stay connected between episodes / seasons. Bandwidth permitting, your newsletter should do more than just let your listeners know that there's a new episode out.

Set your newsletter up with its own clear promise, format, and value — if someone were to find it on its own and not know that there's a podcast, they'd still get value.

Fill in the blanks:
People listen to my podcast to get __________
People subscribe to my newsletter to get __________
The answers should be related, but not identical.

Suggestions for Implementation

LOWER-LIFT: Create a sign-up form, tell subscribers what they’ll receive, send a useful email that isn’t just “new episode out now.”

FULL SHABANG: Set up a newsletter with its own format, welcome email, schedule, and monetization plan...

  • Choose the right platform for you. Ideally, one that provides pre-set templates, analytics, segments, website building, growth and monetization tools, alongside hosting your podcast. beehiiv can do all of that, and doesn't take a cut of your earnings
  • Write a specific subscription promise. Avoid “Sign up for podcast updates.” Try: “Get the research and resources behind each episode” or “Get one practical tip to test.”
  • Build toward monetization. A valuable newsletter creates another channel you can package for sponsors alongside podcast ads, YouTube views, and social posts. beehiiv allows you to sell placements directly, offer paid subscriptions, use affiliate links, or run pre-negotiated ads on the beehiiv Ad Network.
  • Select a sustainable format. Try three useful links, one idea explained, a listener Q&A, an industry briefing, a host note. Choose something you can repeat.
  • Check out this presentation deck from a class I taught called "How and why to start a newsletter for your podcast."
  • Write a welcome email. Introduce the newsletter, restate its promise, and ask new subscribers to reply with a question or introducing themselves.

beehiiv launched new Community features that allow you to build a community alongside your newsletter and podcast.
