Day 1: become a student of the podcast craft

Welcome to Day 1

Hi, I'm Arielle. YOU MADE IT - HAPPY JULY! For the next 30 days, you'll get an idea, tip, resource, or tool — delivered via email. Plus, a discussion thread on Slack.

Today's Idea

Listen to podcasts in your niche. Read newsletters in your niche. Read about the podcast industry. Learn from other creators. (More here).

I know it's a lot of work to make your show AND keep up with your niche, but it's one of the best ways to spot trends, find episode ideas, and keep a pulse on what your peers are doing.

Suggestions for Implementation

  1. Subscribe to podcast industry newsletters. Read them, comment on them, share them with co-workers and colleagues.
    • But also, look for opportunities to get featured (more on that later this month).
  2. Use Reletter.com to find newsletters in your niche.
  3. Use Rephonic.com/graph to find other shows in your niche.
  4. Regularly check in on the shows in your category on Apple, Spotify, Pocket Casts, and other podcatchers.
    • Take note: what are they naming their episodes? What topics are they covering? Should you cover those topics?
  5. When you find a show you love within your category / niche, you can reach out to them for a possible collab. Your pitch will sound natural because you're approaching them like a co-producer would.

Resources

  • Here's where to go to read about podcasting
  • Substack has a pretty robust search function, so you can find more shows / newsletters there.
    • You don't have to write a newsletter on Substack in order to use it as a social platform.

Today's tip is brought to you by AIR Media. AIR works to advance the careers, sustainability, and influence of indie audio creators across public media, podcasting, journalism, and narrative storytelling.

AIR is offering Challengers a 3-month membership to (new AIR members only)! Use code PodcastPowerUp2026 to claim that offer here.

See upcoming events from Well It Depends Labs here. Let me know if you want to attend one but need a discount code. We'll make something work.

Thanks for reading!
